Hokies’ Thompson out 4-6 weeks with hernia
Virginia Tech forward J.T. Thompson is expected to miss four to six weeks of the season after suffering a hernia. Surgery was scheduled for Friday at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The team said the injury was diagnosed Wednesday. Virginia Tech hosts Gardner-Webb in the Hokies’ season opener on Friday.

UNC: Hansbrough ‘extremely doubtful’ for opener
North Carolina coach Roy Williams says reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough is “extremely doubtful” to play in this weekend’s season opener for the top-ranked Tar Heels. In a statement from the school Wednesday, Williams said the team will keep Hansbrough out of practice a little longer as he recovers from a stress reaction in his right shin. Hansbrough has been out of practice for two weeks with the injury, which can be a precursor to a stress fracture.
