Acoma wins Churchill Downs feature (AP)
Acoma outlasted You Go West Girl by a head to win the $111,700 Cardinal Handicap for fillies and mares Saturday at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old daughter of Empire Maker, ridden for the first time by Jesus Castanon, surged past Lemon Chiffon just inside the eighth pole and then repulsed the bid from You Go West Girl to remain perfect at Churchill Downs.
Haynesfield wins Big A’s Discovery Handicap (AP)
Haynesfield beat Bad Action by 4 1/2 lengths with 3-5 favorite Gone Astray third on Saturday in the $103,500 Discovery Handicap for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct. A New York-bred trained by Steve Asmussen, Haynesfield got his sixth win in nine starts. Redding Colliery set the pace in the 1 1-8 mile race until Haynesfield and Gone Astray moved in tandem on the final turn.
2-year-old American Lion takes Hollywood Prevue (AP)
American Lion rallied from third at the top of the stretch to win Saturday's $100,000 Hollywood Prevue Stakes for 2-year-olds at Hollywood Park. Ridden by Julian Leparoux, who flew in from Kentucky to ride the colt, American Lion was behind the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Macias and Indian Firewater coming out of the turn.
