America’s Friend wins Solana Beach (AP)

America’s Friend edged Lightmyfirebaby by a length Sunday in the $109,700 Solana Beach Handicap for older fillies and mares Sunday at Del Mar. Under Alex Solis, America’s Friend ran once around the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course in a stakes-record 1:32.98. America’s Friend returned $6.20, $3.80 and $3, and earned $65,820 for her fourth victory in 24 starts to push her career total to $263,148.


Jockey Club calls for Kentucky Derby field study (AP)
A Jockey Club panel will study whether the number of horses allowed into the Kentucky Derby poses a safety risk. The annual Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs regularly draws 20 horses to the race. Typically, other races are limited to just more than a dozen. Stuart Janney, head of the Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Safety Committee, says the panel will be looking at the race’s size.
