Grand Champion fought back to beat Joey P. by a head Thursday in the $109,200 Fall Highweight Handicap at Aqueduct. After briefly yielding the lead in the lane, Grand Champion dug in to earn his fifth win in 10 career starts for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. “He kept trying,” jockey Eibar Coa said. “I saw that other horse wasn’t getting away from me, so I kept pushing and pushing. He finally came back and got it.” The 4-year-old ran 6 furlongs in 1:09.90 on the good track. Grand Champion paid $6.
Massive Drama wins Hollywood Prevue
Massive Drama defeated Into Mischief by 1 3/4 lengths Thursday to win the $109,200 Hollywood Prevue Stakes at Hollywood Park. Ridden by Hall of Famer Kent Desormeaux, Massive Drama covered seven furlongs in 1:21.48 and paid $6.60, $3.40 and $3. Into Mischief returned $3.80 and $3, while Meal Penalty paid $3.40. Trainer Bob Baffert won his record fourth Prevue Stakes, having saddled consecutive winners from 1996-98.
