Rafer Alston lamented that it's gotten so bad for the New Jersey Nets after 15 straight losses that there's nothing more to say for inspiration. “You bust out a speech at 0-5. You use different quotes from different champions and leaders at 0-10,” he said. “But at this point it's all inside of you as individuals.


Shaq pays for slain 5-year-old’s funeral (AP)

Basketball star Shaquille O'Neal paid for the funeral of a 5-year-old North Carolina girl after being moved by national news coverage of the case of Shaniya Davis, who police say was kidnapped and killed. The Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the stories he saw and got in touch with the family to see what he could do to help, a spokeswoman for O'Neal said Thursday.


Howard, Magic deal Hawks first home loss (AP)

Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic made sure the Atlanta Hawks don't have illusions about their strong start. All it took was Magic coach Stan Van Gundy challenging Howard to play smarter and harder. “I came out in the second half and just trusted my teammates,” Howard said. “They made some open shots and I tried to dominate the paint.


Thunder sign G Wilks to add depth (AP)
The Oklahoma City Thunder has signed veteran guard Mike Wilks after a spate of injuries to the team's other guards. Oklahoma City General Manager Sam Presti announced Wilks' signing on Thursday. The Thunder's two backup point guards, Shaun Livingston and Kevin Ollie, are sidelined by knee injuries, and another guard, Kyle Weaver, suffered a shoulder injury Wednesday during a practice.
