This could be the week Matt Cassel keeps his jersey clean. Cassel has been sacked 24 times in six starts, including 19 the last four games, and has been hurried and knocked down even more often. The Jaguars have a league-low five sacks in seven games, struggling to get any consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. “I don’t really know what the Jags’ stats are, but teams have had some success throwing the ball,” Cassel said. “Any time you’re a quarterback you hope that you can get out there and have the ability to throw the ball. That’s an area where we’ve struggled a bit and hopefully looking to get better in this week.”
Rashean Mathis (finger) fully practiced for the third straight day Friday, according to the Jaguars’ official website. Mathis is expected to start Sunday’s home game against the Chiefs. The star cornerback will provide a boost to the Jaguars’ 26th ranked pass defense after missing Week 8.
Jamal Lewis hasn’t changed his mind. Lewis is ready to devote himself to his Atlanta-based trucking company, All American Xpress, and other business enterprises. But he’d also like to have part-ownership of an NFL team and he’s not picky about which one. ”Whichever one of the owners would want to invite me in,” he said. ”I’ve made multimultimillions, I think it’s time to move up to another step. It’s about the money, but it’s [also] about what you can instill in a team. A lot of the views I have, the teams I’ve been on, there’s a lot of things I would have done different if I were in that position. You would make some decisions that actually matter, when as a player your decisions don’t matter.”
There’s no truth to the notion Jay Cutler will turn green with envy, if not Cardinals red, at the sight of the receivers on the other side when the Chicago Bears host Arizona on Sunday. No offense to Larry Fitzgerald or Anquan Boldin, he likes what he has. “I think we’re fine in that area,” Cutler said. “I think we have three or four very reliable if not above-average guys who can go out there and make things happen. They’re a young group. I think that’s may be their only fault, but they’re not playing like they’re young. They’re doing good things out there.”
