Raiders DE Greg Ellis didn’t play in the second half against Dallas on Thursday because of swelling in his left knee and lower leg. Ellis was in on two tackles in the first series of Oakland’s 24-7 loss. The medical staff tried to drain the knee at halftime and Ellis said there was also swelling in his calf and shin that prevented him from returning in the second half. “If the swelling was just in my knee, I probably would have been able to go out there,” said Ellis, who was released by the Cowboys in the offseason. “But it went down my shin and calf, and you can’t drain that.”

I love it here and I think we can do some great things here.”

[NFL] Bill Cowher Insists He Hasn’t Talked To Any NFL Teams

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher said Thursday that he is not a candidate for any team’s coaching position and does not expect to entertain offers until after the season. “I’ve spoken to no teams and I don’t intend to do so while there is a current head coach,” Cowher, now a CBS analyst, said on The NFL Today. Cowher has repeatedly said that he is not sure when or if he will return to coaching but ESPN and NFL.com reported last week that the Bills approached him to consider their coaching position, an offer he rebuffed. Cowher said it would be offensive to coaches currently with their teams if he entertained offers before the season ends. “Listen, this is a pivotal time of the year and these coaches deserve to have the full support of their organizations,” he said. “So I’m telling you, I’ve talked to nobody.”

Defensive end Andre Carter recently said there was no potential for division to develop in the Redskins’ locker room over the fact that the defense has mostly performed well and the offense has struggled. Wide receiver Santana Moss agreed. “We’re not that kind of team,” Moss said. “I feel that every weekend we go out there with the intent to win, still with a 3-7 record. We go out there knowing that we’re just a play here and there, a drive here and there, from being better than that opponent. I think the past three weeks we’ve really been coming together, and playing decently. Decent as in not where we want to be, but it’s better than what we were before. And all you can do is build off of that. I feel very confident in just knowing that I feel like we have something in mind that we know we can do. And I think we can build on to it and just add more to what we got going, and get some more wins.”

Jets free safety Kerry Rhodes’ benching, first reported by the Daily News, could be the precursor to his ouster. Rhodes signed a five-year, $33.5 million contract extension before the 2008 season, but the blockbuster contract doesn’t tie him to the Jets. Barring injury, none of the remaining money is guaranteed, meaning the Jets can trade or cut Rhodes after the season without a stiff financial penalty - especially with 2010 looming as an uncapped year.
