Evonne Goolagong finally made it to No. 1, although the honor was 30 years late in coming. The Australian tennis star was told by the WTA Tour that she should have been top-ranked for a two-week period in 1976. That was a stretch in which she was in the middle of winning six tournaments, including the Australian Open and the season-ending Virginia Slims Championship.

Life bans, jail for match-fixers at Australian Open
MELBOURNE, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Australian Open organisers have introduced anti-corruption measures including fines, bans and jail terms for any players found to be involved in match-fixing at next year’s opening grand slam.
Chakvetadze tied up, robbed in home (AP)
Russian tennis star Anna Chakvetadze was tied up by masked robbers who broke into her home Tuesday and stole money and goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, her father said. Chakvetadze, ranked No. 6 and a 2007 U.S. Open semifinalist, was bound for 30 minutes in her home outside Moscow but not seriously hurt, NTV television reported.
ATP confirms 2 Italians bet on matches (AP)
The governing body of men’s tennis confirmed Thursday that Italians Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali bet on tennis matches, and the players had no excuse for not knowing this was a rules violation. The ATP said it began investigating in August and found that Starace wagered on matches in 2006 from Feb.
