WASHINGTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Juan Martin Del Potro destroyed German Tommy Haas 6-2 6-1 on Saturday to reach the final of the ATP event in Washington and extend his winning streak to 18 matches.
Cash, Courier advance to Newport final
Pat Cash and Jim Courier won round-robin matches Saturday to advance to the Hall of Fame Champions Cup final. Playing on the historic grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino, Cash beat John McEnroe 6-7 (0), 6-2, 10-7 (Champions tiebreaker) and Courier edged Wayne Ferreira 7-6 (0), 6-3. Cash and Courier won their round-robin groups with 3-0 records. The winner will receive $54,000.
Bryan brothers win bronze in doubles (AP)
Mike and Bob Bryan of the United States have won a bronze medal in Olympic doubles. The brothers rallied to defeat Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday. The Olympic medal is the first for the Bryans, who have won all four Grand Slam championships and 48 tournament titles.
Venus, Serena to play for doubles gold (AP)
Venus and Serena Williams have clinched at least a silver medal in doubles with a victory in the Olympic semifinals. The sisters beat another sibling pair, Ukraine’s Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, on Saturday. The Williams sisters improved to 9-0 lifetime in Olympic doubles. They won the gold medal at Sydney in 2000 but didn’t play doubles in 2004 because Serena was hurt.
Dechy upsets Mauresmo, makes Mason final (AP)
Nathalie Dechy reached her first final in four years with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 upset of fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo in a semifinal of the Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open on Saturday. Dechy, who won the last two U.S. Open womens’ doubles titles, will play in a final Sunday for the first time since losing the championship match at the 2004 New Haven tournament.
